Study of the Performance of Real-Propellant Low-rotational Test for Turbopump of Staged Combustion Cycle Liquid Rocket Engine

Abstract

The turbopump, a critical component of liquid rocket engines, undergoes performance validation through testing in a real-propellant environment. This study analyzes a low-rotational test of the first Technical Demonstration Model (TDM) of a turbopump designed for an upper stage engine. The test was conducted in an enhanced test facility using cold gas as the turbine drive gas. As a result, the rotational speed reached 65% of the design rotational speed, confirming that the turbopump operated normally within the expected performance range. Additionally, the discharge coefficient of the propellant orifice used under TDM test conditions was derived. Based on this study, future research will utilize these results for the development tests of turbopumps for staged combustion cycle liquid rocket engine.

액체 로켓엔진의 구성품인 터보펌프는 실추진제 환경에서 시험을 통해 성능을 검증된다. 본 연구는 성능이 개량된 시험설비에서 상단 엔진에 사용될 터보펌프의 첫 기술개발모델(TDM)을 대상으로 상온 공기를 터빈 구동 가스로 사용한 저회전수 시험을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 회전수는 설계회전수의 65%에 도달했고, 터보펌프의 성능이 예상 범위 내에서 정상적으로 작동하는 것을 확인하였다. 또한, TDM 시험조건에서 사용하는 추진제 오리피스의 유량계수를 도출할 수 있었다. 향후, 본 연구를 바탕으로 다단 연소 사이클 방식의 액체 로켓엔진용 터보펌프의 개발시험에 활용할 계획이다.
